UPDATE as of June 30th, 2011: Manhattan Beach mayor says too late to cancel this year’s Six-Man Volleyball Tournament!
We totally agree! It’s too late to cancel the event despite the sad fact that only 85 teams have signed up for the 2 day tourney compared to 237 teams from last year. A whooping $102,000 deficit still worries city officials who are thinking of if taxpayers should cover additional costs and/or holding the event in just one day instead of two.
The other thing too is that they have increased the registration fee which could be the possible reason why a smaller number of teams are signed up.
Team entry fees are as follows: $1,100 for unsponsored, open teams and $2,500 for open teams sponsored by local businesses, both for up to 12 players with an additional $100 per player; $800 for unsponsored teams and $1,200 for sponsored teams in the master’s division, both for up to 20 players.
Also, Karch Kiraly’s Corona Light Wide Open Tour stop in Chicago falls in the same dates so several professional beach volleyball players will be missing in action.
No doubt that the 6-Man Tourney will still be successful but we hope that they’ll find a resolution to fix the deficit ASAP.
Before we forget, alcohol is strictly prohibited at the event.

If you want this event to push through ladies and gentlemen, then you better start praying signing up your team on or before the July 1st deadline!
We’ve learned that Manhattan Beach’s famous 6 Man Beach Volleyball Tournament is facing a $150,000 deficit. That’s a lot of money! Knowing the US economy is still struggling, we wonder how city officials could come up with that amount.
On July 5th, the City Council will discuss the deficit and hopefully come up with solutions to keep the tournament. Councilman Wayne Powell supports the idea of scaling it back a day to cut costs but he’s a little concerned the extra funding needed to finance the tournament would impact other city events and services. The City of Manhattan Beach has budgeted $224,000 for this years tournament.
If they can’t find ways to fix the deficit then maybe borrow some hope from taxpayers? Possible.
“We’re not talking chump change. At a time when we’re tightening our belts and being fiscally responsible, having the general public subsidize $150,000 is irresponsible. Especially because we just approved a balanced budget.” according to Powell.
So far only 80 teams are registered compared to 143 from 2010.That’s a lot of missing teams! Come on people! Sign up and pay $400 – $2,500 for you team! Sign up and pay $400 – $2,500 for you team! You have until July 1st to sign up!
This year, the tournament is scheduled on July 30th – 31st. For sure, Saikley would be bummed if this year’s tournament gets canned. Anyways, if you want to read more about last years event and the current dilemma, click THIS.

Side Dish: The 6-Man tournament has been held annually since 1964 and is named after Charlie Saikley, a former city parks and recreation supervisor who organized the event for four decades. Saikley died of cancer in 2005.
