The 21 yr old setter from FYR Macedonia sorta made history yesterday.
The setter of Bulgaria’s champions Marek Union-Ivkoni DUPNITSA Gjorgi Gjorgiev achieved a very remarkable record during the last round of the national league where his team beat the team of Montana in straight sets. Gjorgiev registered 13 points at the end of the game, including five blocks, six aces, and two spikes, thereby turning into the top scorer of that game, something which is quite unusual for a setter.
This is a record-breaking performance, at least in Bulgaria.
“Everything went really good in this game” Gjorgiev says. “I served really strong, my block was fine too, but the most important thing is that we showed a good performance in reception. Montana is a very good team and if they find their rhythm, then the match can easily turn into an uphill climb.”
Marek Union – who this year made their second appearance in the CEV Volleyball Champions League – is the current leader of the national league in Bulgaria with a perfect record of 13 victories in as many matches.
As for his national team commitments, Gjorgi and FYR Macedonia will make their debut in this year’s CEV European League.
The team last competed at the 2014 World Championship European Qualification just a few weeks ago.
Keep up the great work Gjorgi!
