In our opinion, Coach Hugh McCutcheon is the world’s best female coach right now.
Anyways, Coach Hugh was interviewed by New Zealand’s Stuff and he shared his thoughts about Team USA and his future job as the head coach of University of Minnesota.
On coaching the USA Women’s Team:
“We had achieved all the goals we had set out to do and I thought it would be interesting to apply some of the principles we had been using with the men and see what it was like to coach women. I’d never coached women before. I didn’t want to keep reinventing the same wheel [with the men]. I thought I knew a lot about international volleyball and it would be good to apply it to a different population.
The demands of being a top coach:
“It’s also hard to coach in the international arena for four years. It’s demanding with a lot of travel, and I thought the change would give me more options in the future whether it was coaching at collegiate level or moving into administration.”
The offer from University of Minnesota:
“The timing was terrible because I was in the thick of things with the [US] team, but Minnesota were able to make me an offer we couldn’t refuse and they were prepared to wait until after London which was huge. We were able to get an interim staff together and we talk every week or two but it’s only for about five minutes.
On UM’s volleyball program:
“The resources available at Minnesota [part of the Big 10 collegiate conference] are possibly better than for the national programme.”
On his paycheck:
“Overall the compensation might be greater.”
After Minnesota:
“I’m not sure what I want to be when I grow up. I’m still figuring that out.”
We hope he won’t retire after coaching at University of Minnesota.
We just have to wait and see what the future has in store for Coach Hugh.
Thoughts?
