Logan Tom Interview

This interview puts a lot of smile on our faces because you know why?

We RARELY read anything about Logan despite being the most prolific American female player in the last 12 years. Hope USA Volleyball can feature Logan more especially during this Olympic year.

Turkish volleyball portal, Voleybol Magazin, interviewed Logan and her fellow Yellow Angels after winning the team’s first ever Champions League crown. Logan talked about a lot of things such as honored she is to bring the crown, which is the second Champions League crown for Turkey with Vakifbank winning it last year.

VM: Öncelikle şampiyonluk heyecanınızı dinleyelim mi?

Logan: Binlerce taraftarın gecenin bir yarısı havaalanına gelmeleri beni çok şaşırttı. Başarımız, kulüp tarihinde bir ilk. Bu başarının parçası olduğum için mutluyum.

VM: Firstly, shall we hear about your excitement about the championship title?

Logan: I was surprised that thousands of supporters gathered at the airport at the middle of the night, just to welcome us. Our success is a first in our club’s history. I am happy that I am part of this success.

VM: O son atışlardaki duygunuzu hatırlıyor musunuz?

Logan: Ben de o anlarda ne yaptığımı, ne hissettiğimi çok fazla hatırlamıyorum. Şok halindeydim. Şampiyonluğa çok yakın olduğumuzu biliyorduk ancak düdük çalınıp da herkesin sahaya girdiği anda bir şeyler oturmaya başladı.

VM: Do you remember what you felt at that last play [of the final]?

Logan: I don’t really remember what I did and what I felt at those moments. I was shocked. We knew we were very close to the championship title, but we realised what had really happened after the last whistle was blown.

VM: Maçın bir gece öncesini nasıl geçirmiştiniz?

Logan: Aslında son güne geldiğinizde fiziksel anlamda yapılabilecek çok fazla bir şey yok. Takım olarak zaten en iyisi olduğunuzu ve o maçı kazanacağınızı biliyorsunuz. Geriye sadece duygusal hazırlık kalıyor.

VM: How did you spend the last night before the match [the final]?

Logan: In fact not too much can be done physically at the last day. We knew we were the best team [of the tournament] and that we would win that match. Only mental/emotional preparation can be done at that point.

VM: Şampiyonluk sonrası ailenizin tepkileri nasıl oldu? Herkes telefonlara mı sarıldı?

Logan: Ailem Los Angeles’ta yaşıyor, arada çok saat farkı var. İnternet üzerinden izlemek için saati kurmuş ve maç saati kalkıp izlemişler. Maç sonrasında konuştuk, çok heyecanlılardı.

VM: How were the reactions of your families after the championship? Did they all call?

Logan: My family lives in Los Angeles and there is a substantial time difference [12 hours between Baku and Los Angeles]. They set the clock to wake up and watch the game. We talked after the game and they were very excited.

VM: Havaalanından dönerken taraftarların coşkulu karşılaması sırasında polisle çıkan çatışma konusunda ne söylemek istersiniz?

Logan: Olayların nasıl başlayıp nasıl geliştiğini fark etmedim bile. Çok yorgundum. Gecenin o saatinde taraftarlar geliyor, heyecanlı ve sevinçliler, böyle bir durumla karşılaşmamaları gerekiyordu.

VM: What would you like to say about the clashes between the Fenerbahce supporters and the police?

Logan: I didn’t even realise how these incidents had started and developed. I was very tired. Excited and happy supporters who came [at the airport] at that time of the night, shouldn’t have encountered such a situation.

VM: Sporda başarılı olmanın yolu hırslı olmaktan mı geçiyor?

Logan: Sadece hırslı olmak yetmez. Hem takım hem de kişisel olarak çok çalışmayı sevmiyorsanız başarıyı yakalamanız kolay olmaz.

VM: Is the key to success ambition in sports?

Logan: Ambition wouldn’t suffice on its own. Unless you like working hard personally and as a team, it wouldn’t be easy to get success.

We could be wrong but as far as we know Logan Tom is the first American female player to win the Champions League since Keba Phipps won during the 1997/1998 edition with Bergamo.

That’s a great accomplishment!
