A KISS FOR EQUALITY!
Less than 2 months before the 2014 Sochi Olympics to be hosted by Russia (a country with very tough anti-gay laws), 2012 Olympic Beach Volleyball Champions Julius Brink & Jonas Reckermann joined other German athletes like August Diehl, Moses Pelham & Thomas D in GQ’s Magazine Fight Against Homophobia.
Here’s the PIC that every ANTI-GAY RUSSIAN LAWMAKER needs to see…
Here’s an excerpt from their GQ Deutschland Feature…
Was it your first kiss with your former beach volleyball partner?
Reckerman: Definitely. Yes.
Brink: Definitely. Yes.
Why did you get involved with the campaign?
Reckerman: It’s about a very, very, very important issue. We did not hesitate long. We saw it as our duty to use our popularity as an Olympic athlete.
Brink: Because it is a subject that is very dear to us athletes. The action is consistent with our attitude and our beliefs. As flagships of our sport, we have represented ourselves to speak on important issues.
How widespread homophobia is in your sport?
Reckerman: It is difficult to make a general judgment. In our relatively young sport, homophobia has no place. On the contrary, some female players are open about their sexuality. But this is not a big issue to us. In other sports that might be different. Especially in football, we hear over and over again that players are advised not to come out. I find it sad that some athletes are still afraid because of the reactions.
Brink: In our sport there are a lot of bare skin, beach volleyball flirts with sexuality . There are many gay couples & homophobia is not an issue. Our sport shows how to deal with the issue. We want to make clear that there is no place for homophobic thoughts. The sport is in the Vordergrund (foreground), and it’s not based on sexual orientation of individual athletes.
