Fashion That Works For Me By Tammy Mahon (Canada).

My style: If I get the chance to be out of training clothes or sweat pants, and head out for the night I am a jeans, tshirt/tank top, blazer kind of girl. My basic style is fairly plain, but I like to accessorize it up with a great pair of shoes, a bag, or some jewelry! On a regular day, I usually dress for comfort, which leads to a lot of Lululemon!! From zip up jackets, to pants, to long sleeve shirts…Lululemon has got it all, and you’ll find most Team Canada girls closets are filled with the stuff!!

Where we train and live (Winnipeg), we have 4 distinct seasons with summer, fall, a cold winter, and spring…so it gives a girl a chance to go on 4 shopping sprees every year to “accommodate the weather”! Well, that is what I say to justify it! I love Fall/Winter shopping the best! Boots, jackets, scarves, warm sweaters, and cute hats! Winnipeg is not the best shopping city in Canada, but they do have a few great boutiques where you can find some trendy, original things that are fun for any season!

Most of my closet consists of black, black and more black. I’ll see an article of clothing I like, try it on a different color for once, but I always end up liking it better in black!!

I have a love hate relationship with jeans. I love them, wear them all the time…but any day I go shopping specifically for jeans, I hate them! With my body type, it is hard to find a pair that fit my waist and my quads at the same time!! So, once I find a brand, I stick with it! Overseas is the best for me…I fit into “ONLY” jeans, so I stock up when I am over here! At home, J Brand jeans have great length and great variety!

I do have favorite pieces in my closet, but they are not always the ones I end up wearing on a regular basis. Volleyball has provided me the opportunity to travel the world, and therefore visit some of the neatest little shops and boutiques! Some of my most favorite pieces I own come from some small boutique in a city where I have either lived or had the opportunity to visit!

Last year we were on tour in Argentina, and I found a dress that I fell in love with! It is labeless, and from a no name boutique in a small town, but it was beautiful and I wore it to my brothers wedding this past summer! Those pieces are so special to me, and I make a point of buying one special article for my closet in each city I live in! For example, from Romania I have a watch, from Azerbaijan I have a purse, from Athens I have an entire new shoe collection ( I couldn t pick just one pair!)

There are many things I see that I wish to buy…but it just isn’t practical right now! I would have no where to wear them! And with travelling back and forth overseas, many things I do buy for my closet go unworn for years!! So for now, I pick one special thing from each place I live, I’ve stocked up on practical Lululemon considering my work, and someday, I will get to try on and buy the clothes I drool over in magazines!!

My favorite make up: Clinique and MAC

My “can not go without” make up: A $4.99 Bonne Bell lip gloss, “Vanilla Swirl”…if they ever discontinue it, I don t know what I will do!!

My splurge item: I’ll pay good money for a pair of jeans that fit!

My staple piece of jewelry: a white gold chain with a “T” pendant on it. I never take it off. My favorite piece of Jewelry is a white swarovksi watch.

My luxury treatment: I spend that on my hair. I have been going to Edward Carriere in Winnipeg for years now, and I never leave unhappy!

Things I can never have enough of: Colorful/fun high heels, hats, a good comfy hoodie, purses

Gadgets: I m not a big gadget person! I can never really keep up with all the new stuff! That being said, I never leave home with out my I Pod. When we travel I will not go without my computer, I Pod, and Kindle.

Favorite Outfit: My black skinny jeans, a long tank top with my black blazer over top, and my blue nine west heels

Shoes: Favorite Casual Shoes – Flip flops or a cute pair of flats. Favorite Going out shoe- a pair of open toed, blush colored heels from Zara. Volley Shoes – Mizuno Wave Lightning. Workout Shoes – Mizuno Wave

Books: I like easy reading. Something that is light and upbeat, with a touch of drama!! I just finished “The Help”, and really enjoyed that. I like books that have movies, but I prefer to read the book first! I like using my own imagination of what the characters look like, how they act etc etc. If I see the movie first, I have a hard time not seeing the actor/actress from the film when I am reading the book!

Bags: A Lululemon bag that the team got me for my birthday last year! It is super handy for travel and it is in my favorite color!

Victoria Secret: Especially going into summer and I want to stock up on some swimsuits!

Most shoe stores: Lots of times they don t have my size in stores, so I have to go on line to order them!

Wedding Dresses: I LOVE looking at bridal sites, and I love looking at wedding dresses! I fear the day I get married, my dress will not fit the simple country wedding I dream of!

Favorite Scent: I have a few that I like to rotate. Dolce & Gabanna “The One”, Versace “Crystals”, Dior “Miss Cherie”.

I get fashion ideas from magazines or watching Fashion TV. But, most of the time, it is my friends who inspire me to try something new or convince me to try on something I wouldn t normally go for!! Everyone has their own unique style, and their own way of expressing themselves…but sometimes, we need a little help. My girls are always up for a shopping trip on days off!!

Who is Tammy? Tammy Mahon is a volleyball player from Canada who has professionally played in several European Leagues. She is one of Canada’s most experienced volleyball players with almost 200 appearances. During her pro-season in Greece 2010/2011, Tammy was selected as the Most Valuable Player after she led Panathinaikos to win the Championship Crown.
