9.22.2011: Wind, Air, Fired & Sand Volleyball
I graduated in May 2011 with a B.A. in Communications. I had played 4 years on the indoor USC Women’s Volleyball team. I thought my career at SC was done. But that wasn’t the case…
Sand volleyball got passed as a collegiate sport and the year 2011-2012 was going to be the first season ever. NCAA rules state that you can have 4 years of eligibility in one sport and a 5th year in a different sport. Since sand volleyball is considered a different sport, I am lucky enough to have the opportunity to wear SC on my shirt for one more year and play sand volleyball for the university.
Although, you may be wondering how that is possible since I have graduated already. It has been amazing just how perfectly everything has worked out. USC offers a progressive degree program that allows students to begin their graduate studies while they are still taking undergrad classes. I got accepted into the progressive degree program for Communication Management my junior year, and I was able to take undergrad and grad classes during my senior year. Because I still have one more year to finish my Master’s at SC, I am able to play sand volleyball.
We just finished our second week of practice and it has been nothing but amazing. The girls are awesome!! Currently we have 6 girls training. Me, Kelly Irvin (she played indoor at SC as well and is also getting her Master’s in the same program as me), Megan Thornberry (she transferred from Wake Forrest and is also working towards a Master’s in education), Sam Hirschmann (after playing her freshman year indoor for USC she decided to join the sand team full time), Erin Kaupp (Erin played in high school, but she was also one of the student managers for the indoor team last year. She now has the opportunity to play with us on the sand team!), and Kati Duddridge (she is a freshman who has committed to our team as a full-time sand player).
Aside from our coach kicking our butts in the sand, and our weight coach getting us nice and strong (big) in the weight room, the atmosphere of the sand team is awesome. We all get along so well, and I can honestly say that these girls are a bunch of studs. I can’t wait to see how much we improve throughout the year and see how well we do.
I went to Cincinnati with Max this past weekend. He wanted to go home for a few days before he leaves back to Italy for another season overseas, and I obviously wanted to go with him too. I had so much fun. Besides relaxing and spending time together, I got a chance to meet a couple of his best friends from grammar/high school, and I also go to go see/eat at a couple new places. All in all, I love Cincinnati. I love being there with Max. I love learning more about where he grew up. I love seeing his city. I loved meeting some of the most important people in his life. And lastly, I loved learning more about the love of my life.
Now I am back in California, love sick out of my mind, and can’t believe he’s already going back to Italy. This summer went by too fast, and it breaks my heart knowing that his home is in Italy for awhile. I’m going to miss being able to call/text him whenever I want, but thank goodness for Skype. It’s going to take time getting used to again, but having a year of long distance under our belts, we can do another. It wasn’t any easier saying goodbye to him because I find myself loving him more and more every day, but thinking positive and knowing that he is apart of my life makes me feel a whole lot better.
I love you, Max
09.04.2011: Why Blog?
After considering this question for quite some time, I came to the conclusion that I wanted to start my own personal blog.
I have been blogging the past couple months for my internship on their website. I have also done a couple fun voluntary blogs for a couple different people and their sites. Having dipped my toes into the blog world with these experiences, and having read numerous personal blogs that my friends have, I decided that I wanted to start my own.
I can write what I want, when I want, and how I want. No restrictions. And through my own personal blog, you, the reader, can learn more about me: what type of writer I am, what type of person I am, what I like, what I don’t like, what I do with my life. Pretty much, whatever I share on my blog is me trying to show you the real me. From me sharing my day-to-day activities to me venting about something I need to get off my chest, I hope to express myself in a creative, fun, and entertaining way that allows you to see who Geena Urango really is (and yes, I did just refer to myself in the third person).

Again, thank you so much girlfriend for sharing these fierce pics and of course your blog entries to us. We’re really excited for your beach volleyball adventure next spring. You know we’d be cheering for you!
Send our regards to Max!
