Qatar Volleyball Association (QVA) Technical Director Hussein Imam Ali believes FIVB’s new 21-point rule, tested at the recent Under-23 World Championships, will help the women’s game.
Seeking ways to modernise the sport, the game’s governing body tried two new rules — 21 points instead of the customary 25 and an interval of 15 seconds between the referee’s whistle and the serve — during the recent women’s Championship held in Tijuana, Mexico, which China won and men’s event in Uberlandia, Brazil which the hosts clinched.
The subsequent change to the time-outs saw one 60 second ‘Technical Time-Out’ applied automatically when the leading team reaches the 12th point as opposed to two previously when the leading team reached the eighth or 16th point.
“I’ve been advocating this rule earlier, especially for the women’s game. The 21-point format will make it more appealing in the women’s game. But I’m not so convined about introducing it in the men’s event,” said Hussein Imam, who is also a member of the FIVB Coaches Commission as well as a certified beach volleyball instructor.
Hussein Imam, who is the pioneer of the Golden Formula rule which was intended to strike a balance between defence and attack in a bid to make the sport more attractive, believes the laws need to be changed from time to time to make the sport more appealing.
“It was precisely for this reason that I devised the Golden Formula. Though the FIVB didn’t approve it, it created a level playing field and neutralised the effect the tall players had.
“We need to change with time. The modern-day game is becoming very predictable and we need to come up with new laws to make it visually more appealing,” he added.
