It’s been 11 years since she retired from the sport but Cuba’s living volleyball legend is still a very busy woman.
Just a few days ago, Mireya Luis was named as the new Beach Volleyball coordinator of the Cuban Volleyball Federation. Prior to this new position, Queen Mireya was a member of the IOC Athletes’ Commission until 2008 with a similar role in the Pan American Sport Organisation and also as international relations officer for the Cuban federation.
“I don’t feel like a stranger because the beach volleyball players are in our same family and my colleagues from the Cuban federation will support me in my new responsibilities. I hope to contribute with the same intensity, consistency and discipline as when I was part of the Cuban volleyball team,” she added. “Beach players sacrifice a lot playing under the sun for many hours and you have to recognize and respect their work.” says the 3 time Olympic Gold medalist.

We’re really happy that she’s still involved with tvolleyball just like her teammates , ie Regla Torres is the assistant coach of the women’s national team while Yumilka Ruiz now serves as a member of the International Olympic Committee by the 120th IOC Session since her retirement in 2008.
We must admit we miss your amazing presence on the court but most of all we’re very proud of you ladies!
