February 16th, 2012 UPDATE: The FIVB has issued its official statement in regards to this new system.
“There is no possibility of Hawkeye being used at the Olympic Games in London due to the key requirement of a rule change in the FIVB rules, which if proposed, needs to be approved by the FIVB Congress. The next FIVB Congress is due to be held in Anaheim, USA from September 17 to 23, 2012.” -FIVB
“The FIVB continues to discuss and explore the possibility of using a review system with the potential for possible implementation at some stage in the future. However no firm decisions have been made at this moment as evaluations are ongoing. One thing is for sure, it is definitely not feasible to implement such a system at the London Olympics due to the timing and any decisions in this direction would only be with the FIVB World Championships 2014 in mind.“ -FIVB executive vice-president responsible for refereeing André Meyer.

Volleyball is going to be very interesting at the Champions League.
The CEV has decided to use the “Challenge System” or “Hawkeye” at the Men’s Final Four of the Champions League. The world’s most prestigious volleyball club tournament will be held in Lodz, Poland and hosted by Polska’s top team, PGE Skra Belchatow on March 17th-18th.
If you’re a tennis fan, then you’d probable know what the Hawkeye system works. If not, here’s a detailed explanation on how it’s going to work at the Final 4 per CEV.LU:
- Special slow motion cameras will be installed at different locations around the area of play as well as on the net.
- Team captains can challenge a questionable call by the ref twice per set.
- If the team asking for the challenge eventually wins it, two chances will remain at their disposal for the remainder of the concerned set.
- If the decision of the referees is challenged, the video footage will be reviewed by the second referee and the captain of the “challenging team”.
The Polish League is already using this system as well as the Korean Domestic League.

We’re not sure if we’re going to LIKE this new volleyball rule. We might have to wait until the Final 4 and get a better understanding of the system and also how it affects the match.
The good thing is that those coaches who constantly complain (example Coach Bernardinho Rezende) can take advantage of this if ever the FIVB decides to use it on various international tournaments.
