Coach Alekno Declined Poland’s Call

We knew he was offered the job…

Former coach of Russia’s men’s team, Vladimir Alekno, reveals that he got a call from the Polish Federation to take over Anastasi’s position but had to say no to the tempting offer.

Per Alekno:

“I got a call, but did not speak directly with the president. I am honored that I have been taken into account. But I could not accept, because I want to still be the coach of Russian national team.

I noticed one specific of your team – when you employ a new coach results and medals comes instantly, but then comes a drop of form and coach is released. And that’s not where the problem lies. You may want to start with the players.”

He ends his statement with this…

“The change of coach year before the World Championship will not bring anything good.”

We totally agree with him! It’s not all with the coach but also on the condition of the players and that firing a great coach before World Champs (which Poland will host) is a terrible idea.

In case you didn’t know, Stephane Antiga got the coaching position. After winning Olympic gold last year, Alekno retired from coaching the national team due to health reasons. Professionally, he coaches Russian club team Zenit Kazan.

Thoughts?
