The rumors after the 2014 World Championship turned out to be true for Germany.
One of the world’s most successful volleyball coaches within the last few years, Giovanni Guidetti, is no longer the coach of the women’s volleyball team after he and the Germany Federation mutually ended his position.
The German Volleyball Federation (DVV) and the head coach of their women’s national team, Giovanni Guidetti, have parted ways. This is due, as explained by DVV President Thomas Krohne, to a lack of trust between coach and players following the 2014 FIVB Volleyball Women’s World Championship held in Italy last September/October.
“After the World Championship, which went quite well for our team especially since we went there with some young, rather new players, there has been a loss of trust between the coach and the players which was not to overcome even in the various conversations we have had,” Krohne explains.
“We are currently rejuvenating the group and we need to work on the development of new players, which means we would require more of Mr Guidetti’s time. However, his availability is limited due to his commitments to VakifBank ISTANBUL, which is currently playing in the Turkish league and cup as well as in the CEV DenizBank Volleyball Champions League.
We have realised that there was no chance to reach a compromise since such issues would have been protracted and remained unresolved. So we have decided to part ways in an amicable, friendly way. We would like to thank Mr Guidetti for his achievements as well as for his contribution to the development of our national team, whose sporting success has been absolutely impressive.”
Guidetti, on the other hand, thanked the DVV for the trust shown in his work for the past eight years, expressing his regret for the latest developments but also his opinion that parting ways at this stage is the right decision, so that the foundations for a new beginning can be laid immediately.
Guidetti was Germany’s head coach since 2006 and under his guidance he steered the team to many successes, including back-to-back European Championship silver medals in 2011 and 2013. The German Volleyball Federation is already talking to potential candidates to appoint the new head coach that will take over the reins of the team which is set to participate this year in the inaugural European Games (June 12-28), in the FIVB Volleyball World Grand Prix (July 3-26) as well as in the Final Round of the CEV Volleyball European Championship in the Netherlands and Belgium (September 26-October 4).
What’s Next For Guidetti?
At the moment, he coaches Turkish club team Vakifbank and has a lot of matches before the professional season ends. Vakifbank is among the top favorite to win the Turkish League and the Champions League.
As for coaching another National Team, the doors remain open for Gio.
In case you didn’t know, German middle blocker Christiane Furst has retired from the National Team due to personal reasons.
With the Olympics next year, it’s going to get tougher for Germany to qualify. Their last Olympic appearance was at the 2004 Olympics in Athens.
