It would be an unforgettable 2016 Olympics if Osmany Juantorena (who now plays for Italy) and Wilfredo Leon (who may play for Poland in the near future) if these 2 former Cuban national team players will be in Rio for the world’s biggest sports event.
Os, who helped Italy qualify for the 2016 Olympics, tells www.przegladsportowy.pl:
“If his dream is to play for Poland, then I hold my fingers crossed for him for his dream to come true just like mine to play for Italy.
I finally became part of the roster and I will fulfill my desire to play at the Olympics.
What more could I want? For my fellow Cubans, it is not a comfortable situation because we can not compete in our own country at the level we would like. We can’t be blamed for such situation we can’t control so we have to look for other solutions.”
In case you didn’t know, Leon has acquired Polish citizenship and has publicly revealed his plan to play for Poland. The process may take a while but there’s a very slim chance we are going to see him at the 2016 Olympics.
The decision will be on the FIVB.
As for their respective careers, Os is with Italian club team Lube while Leon is in Russia with Zenit Kazan.
