Bad News!
Shocking!
Drama!
Europe’s Best Setter Maja Ognjenovic and one of Serbia’s top players Jelena Nikolic will NOT play at the 2011 FIVB World Cup. Coach Terzic has released his roster for the first Olympic qualification tournament in Japan next month.
Serbia’s Roster:
Setters: Antonijevic, Zivkovic
Outside Hitters: Molnar, Vesovic, Malagurski, Malesevic, Lazarevic
Opposites: Brakocevic, Bjelica
Middle Blockers: Krsmanovic, Rasic, Veljkovic, Ninkovic
Liberos: Popovic and Cebic
According to a source, Nikolic already planned to leave the team (regardless if they’d qualify or not for the World Cup) after the recently concluded European Championship which Serbia won against Germany. As for Maja, it could be due to personal reasons.
Maybe Nikolic wants to spend more time with her family?
Coach Terzic has released this statement:
“I don’t want to talk about their reasons, you should better ask them. They told me that they don’t feel ready to play, that they are tired, even though Nikolic played in Doha (Club World Champs). Be it as it may, we’re going to Japan with the strongest squad at the moment, no one is irreplaceable.”
From Terzic’s words we can sense bitterness tension and drama.
Anyways, the absence of these 2 players will totally affect Serbia’s chances BUT we know the 2011 European Champions will play their best to finish in the Top 3 to qualify for the 2012 Olympics. We have a feeling Maja and Jelena will come back sometime.
Good luck to Serbia!
Do You Think Serbia Will Finish in the Top 3 at the World Cup?
We don’t think so.
