This is a bit surprising!
After a few decades, the Cuban team is now using the 5-1 system and opted to use former setter YANELIS SANTOS as an opposite hitter. Oh Really? How come? We don’t like this! We don’t like this! When we think of Cuban volleyball the first thing in our head is the 6-2 system which makes or shall we say MADE CUBA a very unique offensive team. The 6-2 proved to be very effective for them in the 90s well we guess not anymore per what the new coach thinks.
Cuban team since 2001 hasn’t won a major tournament except in 2007 when won the GOLD in the Pan American Games hosted by Brazil which put Fofao in tears.
What’s up with the change coach? Well well well we must admit we are excited to see the new system in Japan but at the same time we will surely miss the 6-2. Bring it on ladies!
Cuban coach Gala says:
“Our goal is to be among the top six teams in this World Championship and the team has been working very hard to achieve that objective. We will have Yusidey Silie as the setter of our team while Yanelis Santos now is switching to the role of opposite. Kenia Carcaces, the MVP at this year’s Montreux Volley Masters and Yoanna Palacios or Wilma Salas will be the wing-spikers. Middle blockers will be Rachel Santos and Rosanna Giel with Lisbet Arredondo as the libero.”
Well we hope this switch works for the team!
As long as Silie is okay setting the entire match then we guess that’s ok.
We bet she gets the itch to hit sometimes!
Side Dish: Former Cuban star Regla Torres is the assistant coach. Also, Cuba used the 5-1 system when they played 2 friendly matches in The Netherlands and lost both.
VICTORIA CUBA!
