First of all, congrats to Argentina for winning the tournament. Together with Brazil, Argentina will represent South America at next year’s World Championship in Italy.
Now, let’s talk about news which is making headlines since yesterday.
After losing to Colombia in 5 sets, Peru must defeat Argentina in 3 to 4 sets to win the tourney and qualify for Worlds. Sadly, nothing went right for Peru with Argentina winning the first 2 sets. In the middle of set 3, the already-discouraged coach of Peru pulled out his team after a questionable dump by Argentina’s Yael Castiglione. To protest the call, coach Sung Jin Hong pulled out his team and instructed them not to return to the court.
The ref eventually realized what was going on and ended the match with the Argentinians celebrating their win.
More info from a source:
“During the 3rd set, the Korean coach for Peru didn’t like that the ref didn’t call a dink from the Argentinian setter, so he called the team off the court, and didn’t allow them back in. It’s not confirmed, but I heard Peru lost on the official score sheet 25-0, 25-0, 25-0. Everyone in Peru is upset and we want the coach to resign. What he did was very embarrassing to Peruvian volleyball.
Argentina won 3-0 (25-0, 25-0, 25-0) after Peru’s coach Sung Jin Hong took the decision to withdraw his team with Argentina leading 25-20, 25-19, 13-9.
According to rule 6.4.1 of the FIVB’s rules and regulations, “If a team refuses to play after being summoned to do so, it is declared in default and forfeits the match with the result 0-3 for the match 0-25 for each set.”
