A Fan Defends Logan Tom

So it appears that a handful of volleyball fans who watched the USA Women’s Volleyball Team Scrimmage last week noticed that Queen Logan Tom had “attitude” throughout the match.

We found this thread from a volleyball forum.

After browsing through the comments, we found this answer which fully justifies why “Logan Tom is Logan Tom“. Whoever this anonymous person is “saywho“, we want to let you know that we perceive Logan Tom the way you do. We appreciate your words and the thoughts you’ve shared.

SayWho Writes…

I would not ever describe her as high maintenance. Ever. Nor would I call her drama.

She has high expectations. She has them for herself, for her team, and for each individual player. Any coach that you talk to will tell you that she is one of the hardest workers in the gym, if not the hardest. This is even said today, when she is consistently one of the best in the gym without needing to stay longer every day…but she does.

What is different about Logan is that she approaches volleyball as a job, a duty, and an obligation. Many of the girls approach it with a more ‘fun’ attitude. This is not to say that I think Logan does not enjoy volleyball. She is obsessed with it; and it has ruled her life. From the time she was 16, she has had to make every decision in her life based on volleyball, from giving up friends, not knowing who some friends were, to never being in the same place for more than a couple months at a time to develop any significant relationships. Once at Stanford for college, a time when most teens are finally away and begin to blossom into adulthood, she was there for only the volleyball season each year, and then she left to train with the national team. 4 months in one place and then onto another. The only continuity in her life has been the predictable changing of her location every few months.

For this reason, she approaches volleyball with a very serious mindset. It is not just a ‘fun game’ — it is a conscious decision to commit yourself to a life that is not ‘standard’ in order to be able to compete at the level she competes; and she has made that conscious decision. If she is going to dedicate her life, which she does, then she is going to expect that others take it just as seriously. Now, not everybody will look at it this way, or handle it this way, but that is how she handles it. I would not call that dramatic or high maintenance. I actually call it the opposite — dedication foremost, but also a shield — self protection against having typical relationships. Perhaps this is why she switches pro teams each year; it protects her from having to live a normal life with predictability. She is an amazing athlete that has spent half her life now in a cycle of going from one training facility to another and along the way has struggled in learning some standard facets of having human relationships to the level most people do. It’s sad; at the same time many people envy her and would kill for her talent, and for good reason; but honestly, how many people are capable of handling such a talent. You see young talents every year that are told at a young age how amazing they are and unfortunately end up going down the drain sooner rather than later; she certainly has not. While she has struggles, as anybody does, she has handled and still handles herself quite amazingly each day in regards to volleyball, her teammates, and USA volleyball.

Well said SayWho!

Logan has represented Team USA for more than a decade and she is a very well respected athlete not just in the US but throughout the world. She is a great role model for aspiring volleyball players. She’s never been suspended, never gone public with her personal life, never dissed anyone on any social media network, honors her professional commitments, she SMILES and she’s one of a kind.

Logan Tom is Logan Tom.

We love you Queen Logan!

You are the BEST American player our generation has ever seen!

Before we forget. we want to remind everyone to watch out for Logan Tom at the 2011 World Grand Prix!
