Surprisingly, Coach Berruto is only taking 1 opposite hitter.
We’re guessing in case Michal Lasko is having a terrible match, then Coach Mauro can tap on the legendary Alessandro Fei (who has played middle and opposite in the past) to give Lasko a break.
Berruto is also taking 2 liberos.
Anyways, this is still a strong Italian squad who will play and fight for one of the top 4 spots in Pool A against host Great Britian, Australia, Poland, Bulgaria and Argentina to advance to the Quarterfinals.
The following 12 players will represent Italia at the 2012 London Olympics:
Libero: Andrea Bari, Andrea Giovi
Setters: Dragan Travica, Danta Bonifante
Middle Blockers: Emanuele Birarelli, Alessandro Fei, Luigi Mastrangelo
Outside Hitters: Cristian Savani, Ivan Zaytsev, Simone Parodi, Samuel Papi
Opposite Hitter: Michal Łasko
Before we forget, we’d like to acknowledge the 39 year old Samuel Papi who will play in his 4th Olympics (1996, 2000, 2004 & 2012).
4 years ago in Beijing, Italia finished 4th.
