A chapter of Volleyball history was written on Friday in Maribor where the home heroines of Slovenia claimed also their second match with France, once more by 3:1 (25-16, 26-28, 25-21, 25-22) as they had done last Saturday in Niort, to celebrate a historic qualification for the Final Round of the CEV Volleyball European Championship. Once the Volleyball highlight of the year gets underway on September 26, Slovenia will join Italy, Poland and the Netherlands in Pool A in Apeldoorn in what will be their first appearance among Europe’s elite since the country’s independence back in 1991.

Slovenia’s men emulated their countrywomen – who had achieved a historic feat on Friday – and they also made the Final Round of this year’s CEV Volleyball European Championship after claiming two sets in their return matchup with Portugal on Sunday. Last week Slovenia had cruised to a 3:0 home win in Maribor and therefore they needed ‘only’ two more sets to seal their ticket to Bulgaria and Italy. They did so even though they had to fight hard for four sets before Portugal claimed a tie-break that was no longer going to have an impact on the qualification for the EuroVolley (20-25, 25-22, 25-19, 23-25, 15-12). The next stop for Slovenia will be in Varna where the players around Volleyball legend Andrea Giani will play 2014 world champions Poland, the ‘Red Dragons’ of Belgium and Belarus. Slovenia’s star Mitja Gasparini was once again the ‘man of the match’ recording 26 points, including eight aces.
