Lindsey Says Goodbye To Villa Cortese
Before anything else, this is just a prelude of what we have in store for you. Coming up in a few days is an EPIC FASHION post featuring Lindsey Berg. It’s like Lili giving us a day to explore her closet. Ok ok ok we’re going to stop giving away the details but we just want to give you the spoiler. Hah!
On a serious note, the American setter has written a very personal message posted on Villa Cortese’s website. Lili takes the time to write and share her emotions as she bids goodbye to her club team she calls home for the last 3 seasons of her professional career.
Without further ado, here you go…
Last Sunday (April 15th) has been closed a parenthesis in my life lasting seven years. I have many, many memories. I met many people, some of them have become friends for life. In Italy I grew up as a player and as a person, that’s because on Twitter there is not the word goodbye, because if I won’t return on the court, I’m sure I’ll be back in this country I love, to these people that are in my heart. The last three seasons have been special, Villa has been my favorite team. Villa Cortese was the highest point of my career in Italy.
Since the first season I loved everything. The city, the club, the fans. I thought it was the perfect place for me, where I could end my career. I can not describe the emotions that our fans given to me. When I heard chanted my name, I felt chills on my skin. I felt loved, but was first of all a demonstration of love and passion that these fans have for the team, for the sport. Even in Novara and Pesaro I had passionate fans, but what I felt here, I had never tried.
I know that this emotion in my voice is far from what appears when I’m in the court.I do not bring My sensibility with me when I play. it is as if it came out from my body. In the court I am aggressive, combative,
almost seems I do not have weaknesses or feelings. In the court I can’t afford it.
I’m sorry that these three years at Villa Cortese did not end with the Italian title. It was the most important objective we set ourselves, and we have not reached it. We get so close, a single ball could change everything. For the work done by the team and Marcello would have been fair realize our dream at least one of the three occasions, as captain of the team I am deeply proud of this season. It ‘s true for the first time did not arrive any trophy, but reaching the Final Four Champions for an Italian team is an important achievement. In Europe there are teams that cost three times more or four times compared to ours, and they remained watching. The championship final has finished after five games at tie break. The team was great because during this series never gave up, they always carried in a draw, and faced without creating alibis an important injury like that of Martina Guiggi. Stufi was very good to replace her but could not make in the court the experience of Martina, who was in its seventh championship final.
I’m focused on this objective. I have 100 days to convince the coach that I can be useful to the team and to improve the metal of medals won in Beijing (silver). Of course I have to deal with my knee after 22 years of volleyball.
What I am going to do next? I do not know. I thought to take me a year off, but then I received some important offers from abroad. I take more possible time, I will decide after the Olympics, I know that might be too late and that teams might not wait for me.
I have many ideas to realize. One of these is opening a women’s fashion boutique in Los Angeles. With my two associates the project is already started.
Well said Lili.
Your words got us teary eyed. You will always be the “cuore” of Villa Cortese.
