We’re not too sure if we’d be excited for this news or feel a little sad.
Starting next season (2011/2012), Cuban outside hitter Osmany Juantorena will be registered as an Cuban Italian player after receiving the official approval from the FIVB and FIPAV. In case you didn’t know, Os has been playing in Italy for Trentino Volley since 2009.
Os’ Italian citizenship now allows Trentino Volley to look and hire another foreign player for their squad. Knowing Trentino has the reputation for being the best club team in the world with great sponsors, no doubt they could afford and convince any great player to join them in a heartbeat.
There’s also a possibility that Os will play for the Italian Team.
We remember Osmany saying that if he’d ever play in the Olympics it would to be with Cuba. Since he’s Italian now, his dream is impossible to happen at this point. Unless, there’s such thing as dual citizenship in the immigration laws of the FIVB.
We’re happy for Os but we really wanted him to play for Cuba again.
Just saying.
Thoughts?
