Volleywood began as a Facebook blog page that covers the sport of volleyball in various aspects: tournaments, athletes, results, statistics, images, news and entertainment. The page was created with a vision to promote the sport, to build connections between athletes and fans, and to invite people to discover the addiction that is volleyball. With over 5,000 supporters from all parts of the globe, Volleywood is a strong community that continues to grow each day. The Facebook page is viewed worldwide by followers from Bogota, Hong Kong, Madrid, Manila to as far as Athens and Thessaloníki. In August & September 2010, the page received almost 100,000 site visits according to Facebook Stats.
Volleywood is a positive and fun social venue for people to interact and to share their thoughts about the game and their favorite players. Furthermore, Volleywood has branched out to other social media such as Twitter and Youtube, and even an online store on Zazzle. Ace, the main blogger, is a guest reporter on The Net Live (Reid Priddy’s online radio show with Kevin Barnett) and delivers the latest international volleyball news on his segment, “The Volley Jet Ride.” Volleywood is also planning to launch it’s own show. These networks help the page build a community that’s more interactive, more up-to-date, more entertaining and more enticing for volleyball fans.
Volleywood wants to be a new force to promote the sport and the athletes at all levels, to draw more fans and supporters for the teams and players in a convenient and engaging approach. Volleywood has a vision on how the sport can bring more fans, grow their network and be more fun. The blog has a captive audience and continues to create an online presence that is fun and engaging and serves as a bridge between fans, coaches and sponsors.
Volleywood’s creativity allows it to publicize and highlight the different aspects of the sport and the players. For example, we launched a fundraising campaign for the typhoon victims in the Philippines on the Volleywood Facebook page featuring national players and even Olympic gold medalists from South Africa, Ryk Neethling and Lyndon Ferns (swimmers). The campaign was a success and donated $1,500 to the victims through a personalized page on the World Food Program website. Another successful awareness campaign was carried out after the Haiti Earthquake.
Our perspective in presenting volleyball is different. We add colorful, entertaining and compelling posts that invite fans to interact and create a sense of community on my page. Our site is different from other blogs about volleyball because it is more fun and engaging. Some of our popular and ‘in-demand’ blog posts include the “Hot-or-Not’ and ‘What-If?” columns. These all provide a light-hearted approach to blogging about players and engaging our audience in a captivating manner.
Through our creativity and different perspective, the fans constantly check the page for the latest news and updates, scores and stats. The page has provided links for fans to watch live streaming matches for international tournaments and domestic club matches. Volleywood has posted live links for the World League and the Grand Prix, the Pan American Cup, the Volley Masters and most recently the 2010 Men’s World Championship. Most recently, Ace was invited to go to Rome to blog about the Final Round as part of a team of international volleyball bloggers. Ace was chosen to represent the USA.
