Leon is one step closer from playing for the Polish National Team.
Leon’s Official Statement released by thenews.pl:
“I will do everything that is in my power to deserve to play for Poland
I give a declaration that I will do everything in my power to deserve the honour, which for me is playing in the Polish National Team. Obtaining Polish citizenship has given me a huge motivation for this, to show my best in every upcoming tournament.
I stress that in order to obtain Polish citizenship there were no financial considerations, but only life and sport.
I live in Poland with my fiancée and I will continue living in this country.
In consideration of my situation, I would ask for no political overtones to be associated with Cuba. I am a native Cuban, I’ve got my family and my trip was connected only with my personal affairs.
Greetings to all volleyball fans in Poland and those who support us.”
The source also adds that the FIVB has not approved Leon’s status BUT Polish authorities are expediting the process so he can play for Polska ASAP.
Poland’s coach Antiga previously stated that he does NOT support such move for an athlete like Leon. But he is willing to take Leon if the opportunity presents itself.
Antiga’s statement released by sportowefakty.pl:
“I think that, in general, there shouldn’t be a possibility of changing the national team and playing for a different country, because it’s a little unfair. But, since the system works this way at the moment and one of the best players in the world wants to play for Poland, he is welcomed.
If we have the opportunity, we should use it.”
It looks like former Cuban players Leon and Juantorena may face against each other at the 2016 Olympics. Junatorena is getting ready for his debut with the Italian NT later this year.
Any Thoughts?
