FIVB Says…
The FIVB Volleyball Women’s World Cup returns in 2011, marking the first step in the qualification proces for the London 2012 Olympic Games. The tournament will run from November 4 to18 and will see the top three teams qualify for the Olympics. They will join Great Britain as they have already secured a berth as the host country.
A total of 12 teams will take part in the contest, all of which will have qualified for the tournament through their respective continental competitions, either as the champions or as one of the four best runners-up from around the world. Additionally, two wildcards were selected with hosts Japan also set to compete.
Last time around it was Italy who clinched their first ever title, equalling the men’s achievement in 1995. They denied Brazil a first gold as the South American side had to be content with a third silver medal in four tournaments. USA completed the podium with bronze matching their highest position in the tournament after they finished third in 2003. Cuba won the World Cup the most times, claiming four in a row from 1989-99. However they haven’t won another medal since then.
The 12 Qualified Teams:
Brazil (South American Champions)
USA (NORCECA Champions)
Japan (Hosts)
Serbia (European Champions)
China (Asia Champions)
Italy (Wild Card)
Germany (European runner-up)
Korea (Asian bronze medalist)
Dominican Republic (NORCECA runner-up)
Kenya (African Champions)
Algeria (African runnerup)
Argentina (Wild Card)
