Casey Patterson DISAPPOINTED After Rio Exit

Casey Clears The Air

In this article released by ocregister.com, Casey clears the air and shares that he shook hands with Spain and congratulated them after the match.

More from the said article:

“Patterson said it’s not uncommon for players to forego the post-match handshake under the net after a big match, when one team is celebrating and the other just wants to get out of there. He said he had never failed to catch up with the winner later to congratulate them, though.”

Casey says…

“We’re all really good friends, too. A lot of times when you win a big match, you yell and scream. By that time the other team has left. We always take care of it either on the way out or later.”

Take note, players have 90 seconds to leave the sand after the match.

After the loss, Casey is enjoying Brazil with his family.

The Volleywood Opinion

We watched the video and Casey has a VALID reason to get upset BUT we wish he didn’t choose to just walk away. With thousands watching, he can’t be that player some will remember as the one “who walked out because he lost”. On the other hand, we wish the ref explained BETTER on why he allowed Spain to make that challenge.

What Happened?

As explained by USA Volleyball: In the third and deciding set for safety in the pool, the U.S. trailed 5-3 before a joust play was challenged by Spain for four touches, the point was overturned and the momentum shifted by Spain who in turn went up 6-2.

Olympic Challenge System In Beach VB

Players can only challenge based on the following:

Net violation
Antenna touch
Ball in
Ball out
Block touch
Foot fault at service

We wish the ref explained his decision better rather than giving Team USA a yellow card due to delay.

Casey Patterson Explains

American beach volleyball player, Casey Patterson, explains his side on the controversial call which may have ruined their chances to qualify for the next round. With the heartbreaking defeat, Casey and partner Jake Gibb have been eliminated from the Olympics. They are “the first U.S. pair to fail to advance from Olympic pool play since 2004”.

“As soon as they challenged the four touches, we didn’t understand what they were challenging. I asked the ref what they were challenging and he said four touches.

A joust is a play that happens once or twice a match, almost every match. A joust, play it out and go.

All everyone saw was Jake touching the ball. The issue was it was a joust and it shouldn’t have been an opportunity to challenge that play. Of course he touched the ball, he jousted then covered it.

You’re taking away the human experience that’s been built up over years with these referees where they’ve watched the game and you’re relying on a camera that is irrelevant to the call being made. Somehow now we’re challenging a routine play that the referees are very good at making. We’ve never had an issue with that. It was frustrating that the referee thought it was a joust but when Spain challenged, it had to go to the camera and it was out of the referees hands.

It wasn’t that call that decided the game, but it did disrupt our momentum and gave them that much more of a lead when every point counts.”

From Jake Gibb

“We fought that’s what we do.That’s what this team does; it’s what we’ve done for four years together. We gave everything we had and it totally blows that we have to sit here and watch this next match to see if we’re still alive in this tournament.”

Thoughts?

Team USA still has Lucena-Dalhausser in the men’s event while the women’s side has Kerri-April. Both teams advanced to the Round Of 16.
