After all the drought, the rain, the storm and the drama (Muserskiy’s decision not to play at the tournament), Russia has defeated tourney favorites Ngapeth and France to win a spot to this year’s Olympic Games.
Behind the superb setting of Grankin, the near unstoppable Mikhaylov, the reliable veteran Berezhko, the great rookie performance, the team’s fighting spirit and the well planned coaching of Alekno, Russia will defend their Olympic crown in Brazil.
Russia coach Vladimir Alekno:
“I would like to stress that this tournament was a lot more difficult and competitive than the European Championship three months ago. Of course I am very happy with the result and also for all players on the team who have worked hard towards this achievement.”
Will he call Muserskiy back to the team for the Olympics?
Let’s wait and see.
France and Poland will have another shot to qualify for the Olympics at the World Olympic Qualification Tournament.
Good luck!
